During an ICC World Cup 2003 clash in Potchefstroom in South Africa, Glenn McGrath recorded brilliant figures of 7/15 against Namibia.

Meanwhile, the likes of Australia’s Andy Bichel, Tim Southee of New Zealand, West Indies�?Winston Davis and Gary Gilmour of Australia feature in the top five best bowling figures in the ODI World Cup list.

Among Indian bowlers, fast bowler Mohammed Shami has the best bowling figures in ODI World Cup history. He recorded sensational figures of 7/57 against New Zealand in the first semi-final of World Cup 2023 in Mumbai.

Former Australia pacer Glenn McGrath registered the best bowling figures in ODI World Cup history. Defending 301, McGrath produced a sensational bowling spell of 7-4-15-7 to bundle out Namibia for 45 during an ICC World Cup 2003 clash in South Africa. The right-arm pacer dismissed Namibia’s Jan-Berrie Burger, Morne Karg, Danie Keulder, Gavin Murgatroyd, captain Deon Kotze, Louis Burger and Bjorn Kotze to help Australia secure a massive 256-run victory. 

Andy Bichel | 10-2-20-7

Australia’s Andy Bichel has the second-best bowling figures in ODI World Cup history. During an ICC World Cup 2003 encounter in Gqeberha, Andy Bichel recorded magnificent bowling figures of 10-0-20-7 against arch-rivals England. The former speedster removed Nick Knight, Michael Vaughan, skipper Nasser Hussain, Alec Stewart, Paul Collingwood, Andrew Flintoff and Ashley Giles to restrict Australia to 204/8 in their 50 overs. Australia later chased down the target in 49.4 overs and registered a thrilling two-wicket win.

Tim Southee | 9-0-33-7

New Zealand fast bowler Tim Southee features third on the best bowling figures in the ODI World Cup list. Southee recorded match-winning figures of 9-0-33-7 against England during an ICC World Cup 2015 clash in Wellington. Southee troubled the England batters as he bagged the wickets of Ian Bell, Moeen Ali, Jos Buttler, Chris Woakes, Stuart Broad, James Taylor and Steve Finn to help bowl out England for 123 in 33.2 overs. New Zealand rode on Southee’s impressive bowling spell to secure a comprehensive eight-wicket victory.

Considered to be one of the greatest bowlers of all-time, Glenn McGrath took 71 wickets in 39 ICC World Cup matches.

Spin legend Muttiah Muralitharan is second on the list for players with most wickets in ODI World Cup history having accounted for 68 scalps in 40 games.

Sri Lanka’s Lasith Malinga and Pakistan Wasim Akram feature third and fourth, respectively, on the highest wicket-takers in ICC World Cup list. While Malinga picked 56 wickets in 29 matches, Akram scalped 55 wickets in 38 matches.

Glenn McGrath | 71

Former Australia fast bowler Glenn McGrath is currently the highest wicket-taker in ICC World Cup history. Between 1996 and 2007, McGrath scalped 71 wickets in 39 matches at an average of 18.19 and an economy of 3.96. He bagged two five wicket-hauls including his best bowling figures of 7/15 in the ODI World Cup. McGrath was part of the Australian cricket team that won three consecutive ODI World Cup trophies in 1999, 2003 and 2007.

Legendary spinner Muttiah Muralitharan is second on the highest wicket-takers in ICC World Cup list. Muralitharan featured in five editions of the ODI World Cup in 1996, 1999, 2003, 2007 and 2011. The former off-spinner picked 68 wickets in 40 World Cup matches at an average of 19.63 and an economy of just 3.88. He registered four four wicket-hauls in the marquee ODI World Cups. Muralitharan was a member of the Sri Lanka team that won the 1996 Cricket World Cup.

Lasith Malinga | 56

Former Sri Lankan pacer Lasith Malinga features third on the highest wicket-takers in ICC World Cup list. Regarded as one of the greatest limited-overs bowlers of all-time, Malinga bagged 56 wickets in 29 World Cup matches at an average of 22.87 and an economy of 5.51. Interestingly, he is the only bowler in world cricket to have two World Cup hat-tricks. Malinga was part of the Sri Lankan team that finished as runners-up in the 2007 and 2011 ODI World Cups. 

Wasim Akram | 55

Pakistan’s Wasim Akram is the fourth highest wicket-taker in ICC World Cup history. After making his ICC World Cup debut in 1987, Akram finished with 55 wickets in 38 World Cup matches at an average of 23.83 and an economy of 4.04. Widely regarded as one of the greatest fast bowlers of all time, Akram helped Pakistan clinch the 1992 Cricket World Cup. Under his leadership, Pakistan reached the final of the 1999 Cricket World Cup before losing to Australia by eight wickets.

Mitchell Starc | 54

Australia left-arm pacer Mitchell Starc is fifth on the highest wicket-takers in ICC World Cup list. Having featured in three editions of the ICC World Cup between 2015 and 2023, Starc bagged 54 wickets in just 21 matches at an average of 15.79 and an economy of 4.65. He was an integral member of the Australian team that won the 2015 Cricket World Cup.

Former Sri Lanka spinner Muthiah Muralidaran holds the record for most wickets in Test cricket. During his career that spanned from 1992 to 2010, the legendary off-break bowler scalped 800 wickets in 133 Test matches at an average of 22.72.

Muralidaran is only one of two bowlers to have breached the 700-wicket mark in cricket’s longest format, with the other being Australia’s Shane Warne, who has 708 Test wickets to his name.

Among the nine teams Muralidaran has faced in his Test career, England have been his favourite victim, with the spinner picking 112 wickets at an average of 20.06 against them. Next up for him are India with 105 wickets against them at an average of 32.62 followed by South Africa with 104 wickets against the Proteas at an average of 22.22. It is only against these three teams that the spinner has picked more than 100 wickets.

Meanwhile, as far as batters are concerned, Mark Boucher has been dismissed more times (12) by Muralidaran than any other player. Zimbabwe’s Grant Flower who was dismissed 10 times by Murali follows the South African while Waqar Younis, Mohammad Yousuf and Khaled Mashud were also dismissed by the Sri Lankan legend nine times each.

Muralidaran, who also holds the record for the most player of the series awards in Test cricket (11), registered his best bowling figures against Zimbabwe in 2002, ending with figures of 9/51 in one innings. The spinner took 13 wickets in that match.

Furthermore, while Muralidaran and Shane Warne are the only bowlers to have scalped more than 700 wickets in the longest format, James Anderson sits third on this list with 689 wickets in 182 matches. The England pacer has registered 32 five-wicket hauls during his Test career, with his best bowling figures - 7/42 - coming against West Indies in 2017. 

Former India spinner Anil Kumble, who has bagged the most Test wickets for India, sits fourth on the list with 619 wickets followed by England’s Stuart Broad (600 wickets) in the fifth spot.

India cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin has the best bowling strike rate in Tests amongst bowlers with minimum 450 wickets.

The veteran off-spinner currently has a strike rate of 51.12 in Test cricket, which is better than the top five leading wicket-takers in cricket’s longest format. Ashwin holds a better strike rate in Tests than the likes of Muttiah Muralitharan, Shane Warne, James Anderson, Anil Kumble and Stuart Broad.

Among the 450-wicket mark, only former Australian fast-medium pacer Glenn McGrath comes close to Ravichandran Ashwin for the best bowling strike rate in Tests. Since making his Test debut against West Indies in 2011, Ravichandran Ashwin has become India’s biggest match-winner with the ball in the red-ball format. The Indian off-spinner has picked up 486 Test wickets in 93 matches at an average of 23.61 and a strike rate of 51.12, which is the best among bowlers with at least 450 Test wickets. He has scalped 34 five-wicket hauls in cricket’s longest format so far.

Glenn McGrath | 51.95

Considered to be one of the greatest bowlers of all-time, former Australian cricketer Glenn McGrath tormented batters from the mid-1990s to the late 2000s. Known for his immaculate line and length, McGrath bagged 563 Test wickets in 124 matches at an average of 21.64 and an impressive strike rate of 51.95. He is currently the sixth-highest wicket-taker in Test cricket.

Muttiah Muralitharan | 55.04

Legendary Sri Lankan cricketer Muttiah Muralitharan holds the world record for the most wickets in international cricket. Between 1992 and 2011, the right-arm off-spinner scalped 1347 wickets in 495 matches at an average of 22.86. In Test cricket, Muralitharan is the only bowler to pick 800 Test wickets in 133 matches at a strike rate of 55.04. He bagged 67 five-wicket hauls, which is the most by any bowler in Tests.

Having made his international debut against Australia in a Test match in 1992, Muralidaran ended his career as the all-time highest wicket-taker in international cricket with 1347 scalps in 495 matches at an average of 22.86. He recorded 77 five-wicket hauls and 22 10-wicket hauls in his international career.

Considered to be one of the greatest bowlers to have played the sport, Muralidaran bagged 800 Test wickets in 133 matches at an average of 22.72 - the most by any bowler in the longest format of the game.

Muralidaran also holds the record for picking the most wickets in the ODI format, bagging 534 wickets in 350 matches at an impressive average of 23.08 and an economy of 3.93. 

The legendary off-spinner also played 12 T20Is, claiming 13 wickets at an economy of 6.31.

Muralitharan made his last international appearance in the 2011 World Cup final against India in Mumbai, which Sri Lanka lost by six wickets.

Australian legend Shane Warne features second on the list for most wickets in international cricket. During his international career, the leg-spinner picked 1001 wickets in 339 matches at an average of 25.51 including 38 five-wicket hauls and 10 10-wicket hauls.

Between 1992 and 2007, Warne bagged 708 Test wickets in 145 matches and 293 ODI wickets in 194 matches. 

England pacer James Anderson is third on the list for most wickets in international cricket. Anderson has bagged 975 wickets in 394 matches at an average of 27.12 with 34 five-wicket hauls and three 10-wicket hauls.

Former India spinner Anil Kumble and ex-Australia fast bowler Glenn McGrath complete the top five list for most wickets in international cricket.

While Kumble picked 956 wickets in 403 matches, McGrath picked up 949 wickets in 376 matches. Currently, Anderson has the most wickets in international cricket among active players.

The Ashes series between England and Australia is one of the most intense Test rivalries in cricket history.

Players want to be at their best for their respective teams during this one-of-a-kind series and cement their status as cricketing heroes for their country.

This, however, is easier said than done especially in the ultra-competitive environment that makes up an Ashes Test.

While plenty of records are created by players with their exemplary performances during the course of this series, some individuals end up with a few unwanted records as well.

One such unwanted record that no player wants to be associated with in this historic rivalry is that of the most ducks in Ashes.

A player is considered out for a duck in cricket when he or she fails to score even a single run and is dismissed for zero without troubling the scorers.

There are several types of ducks in cricket, including the golden duck. However, the ultimate ignominy that players can endure is being out for multiple ducks in their career and especially in a high-profile series like the Ashes.

Syd Gregory (Australia) | 11 ducks

Syd Gregory represented Australia from 1890 to 1912 and during this time he played against England in 52 Tests. The right-handed batter who was known for his wrist and footwork holds the unwanted record for most ducks in Ashes Tests after being dismissed for zero on 11 occasions. He scored four hundreds and eight fifties against England but is mostly remembered as the player with the most ducks in Ashes history.

Glenn McGrath (Australia) | 10 ducks

Second on this unwanted list is Asutralian fast bowling legend Glenn McGrath. He played 30 Tests against England and succumbed to ducks 10 times against them. McGarth, who is fourth on the list for most ducks in international cricket, had a batting record against the English that didn’t make for kind reading. Apart from his 10 ducks, he only managed 105 runs against England at an average of 6.17 in red-ball cricket.

Shane Warne (Austalia) | 10 ducks

Like McGrath, Australian spin legend Shane Warne also had 10 ducks against England. Warne played 36 Tests against the English and while he did manage to score 946 runs, including four fifties in those games, the Australian great is still one of just three cricketers who features in double digits for most ducks in Ashes.

England cricketer James Anderson owns the record for the most wickets in international cricket among pacers.

Since making his international debut against arch-rivals Australia in a One-Day International (ODI) match at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) in 2002, James Anderson has bagged 954 wickets in 388 matches at an average of 27.15. He has registered 34 five-wicket hauls and three 10-wicket hauls in his international cricket career so far.

Considered to be one of the greatest swing bowlers in cricket’s history, Anderson is currently the leading active wicket-taker in Test cricket. The right-arm fast bowler has claimed 672 Test wickets in 176 matches at an average of 26.16 and an economy of 2.79. He has recorded 32 five-wicket hauls and three five-wicket hauls since donning the England jersey for the first time in the longest format against Zimbabwe at Lord’s in 2003.

The legendary pacer has also played 19 T20Is, scalping 18 wickets at an average of 23.44 and an economy of 7.85.

Anderson has surpassed the previous record held by Australia fast bowler Glenn McGrath. 

Between 1993 and 2007, Glenn McGrath picked 949 international wickets in 376 matches at an average of 21.76 and an economy of 2.93.

McGrath made his international debut against trans-Tasman rival New Zealand in a Test match in Perth in 1993. He ended his legendary Test career as the fifth-highest wicket-taker with 563 scalps in 124 matches at an average of 21.64. McGrath registered 29 five-wicket hauls and three 10-wicket hauls in his Test career.

The Australian speedster also featured in 250 ODIs, scalping 381 wickets at an average of 22.02 and an economy of 3.88. He also bagged five T20I wickets in two matches he played for the Men in Yellow.

Meanwhile, former Pakistan cricketer Wasim Akram is third on the list for the most wickets in international cricket among pacers. 

Having made his international debut against New Zealand at Iqbal Stadium in 1984, Wasim claimed 916 wickets in 460 matches at an average of 23.57 including 31 five-wicket hauls and five 10-wicket hauls.

Akram finished as the second highest wicket-taker in the ODI format, having picked 502 wickets in 302 matches at an average of 23.53 and an economy of just 3.89. He recorded 17 four-wicket hauls and six-wicket hauls. In the longest format, the Pakistan fast bowler claimed 414 wickets in 104 matches at an average of 23.62. 

South Africa’s Shaun Pollock and Stuart Broad of England complete the top five list.

While Pollock has claimed 829 international wickets in 423 matches, Broad has already bagged 809 wickets in 336 matches.

Legendary Australian cricketer Shane Warne holds the record for most wickets against one opponent in Test cricket.

The spinner, who picked up four wickets in his very first match against the Ashes rival in 1993, ended his career with 195 wickets in 36 Tests against England.

Warne’s best spell came in 1994 when his 8/71 inspired Australia to a 184-run victory at Brisbane. Among his victims were Graeme Hick (80), Graham Thorpe (67) and Graham Gooch (56) who played strong cameos in England’s second innings total of 323.

Among his 195 scalps against England, Shane Warne dismissed Alec Stewart a record 14 times.

Warne’s tally of wickets is second to none. The next bowler in the line to take most wickets against one opponent in Test cricket is Dennis Lillee. The former Australian quick grabbed 167 wickets in 29 Tests against Australia, and his best figures (7/81) coming in the 1981 Ashes Test at the Oval.

West Indian icon Curtly Ambrose is the third bowler with most wickets against one opponent in Test cricket. The towering bowler is the leading Windies wicket-taker against England, with 164 wickets in 34 matches. He is best remembered for his match-winning spell of 8/45 that propelled West Indies to a 164-run win at Bridgetown in 1990.

Glenn McGrath and Ian Botham wrap up the top-five list of bowlers with most wickets against one opponent in Test cricket.

McGrath, Australia’s leading Test wicket-taker in history with 563 wickets in 124 games, was one of England’s greatest tormentors in modern day cricket. In 30 head-to-head games, Glenn McGrath claimed 157 wickets with his best figures in an innings (8/38) coming in the 1997 Lord’s Test. His efforts helped the visitors reduce England to one of their lowest scores in red-ball cricket (77).

Lastly, Ian Botham grabbed 148 scalps in 36 meetings with Australia. The England icon’s best performance against the Aussies (6/78) came in a 138-run loss in the 1979 Perth Test.

Anil Kumble holds the Indian record for most wickets against one opponent in Test cricket. The iconic spinner grabbed 111 wickets in 20 matches against Australia, with his best spell coming in the 2004 Sydney Test

Former South Africa cricketer Shaun Pollock has bowled the most maiden overs in ODI cricket.

Having made his one-day international (ODI) debut against England in 1996, the right-arm pacer bowled 313 maiden overs in 303 ODIs. 

Interestingly, Pollock is the only cricketer to have bowled more than 300 maiden overs in ODI history.

Considered to be one of the greatest fast bowlers of all time, Pollock picked 393 wickets at an impressive economy of 3.68 and an average of 24.51.

The former Proteas captain played his last ODI match against West Indies in 2008 as he ended with five five-wicket hauls in his scintillating career.

Apart from Pollock, former Australia fast bowler Glenn McGrath and Sri Lanka left-arm pacer Chaminda Vaas have bowled the second most maiden overs in ODI cricket.

Both McGrath and Vaas registered 279 maidens in their respective ODI careers. While McGrath bagged 381 ODI wickets in 250 matches at an average of 22.02, Vaas claimed 400 wickets in 322 ODI matches at an economy of 4.18.

Former Pakistan left-arm speedster Wasim Akram features next on the list. Often regarded as one of the most lethal pacers of all time, Akram bowled 237 maidens in his ODI career, scalping 502 ODI wickets in 356 matches at an average of 23.52 and an economy of 3.89.

India 1983-World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev is also among the best, with 235 maiden overs in ODIs. In his 16-year-old ODI career, Dev scalped 253 wickets in 225 matches at an average of 27.45 and an economy of 3.72

Former Sri Lanka off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan bowled 198 maiden overs in ODI cricket while former West Indies fast bowler Curtly Ambrose registered 192 maiden overs in his ODI career.

New Zealand cricketer Richard Hadlee, West Indies fast bowler Courtney Walsh and New Zealand’s Ewen Chatfield complete the top 10 list.

While Richard Hadlee and Courtney Walsh bowled 185 maiden overs each, Ewen Chatfield registered 155 maidens in the ODI format.

Meanwhile, India’s Jhulan Goswami holds the record for the most maiden overs in women’s ODI cricket. Goswami has bowled 260 maidens in 199 matches.

The India women’s cricket team pacer broke the record held by former England cricketer Clare Taylor, who had bowled 205 maiden overs in her career. 

India’s Neetu David (189), Australia cricketer Cathryn Fitzpatrick (188) and Katherine Brunt of England are the other three players to have bowled more than 150 maiden overs in women’s ODI cricket.
